Addendum
In the previous entry I talked about the value of curation, film reviewers you trust, et cetera.
I should note that even when you manage to get your hands on good curation that has a proven track record for you, it can sometimes fail you.
So far every friend whose opinion on films I trust enough to value, and every film critic I trust enough to bother to read (which, these days is, like, two of them), has completely magnetized and scampered off to opposite poles re the film Digger.
Either you think it's the most brilliant film that's come along in a long time, with a lot of important and interesting things to say, or you think it is a plot to utterly waste an extremely long 129 minutes of your life, with a message that is obvious, preachy, and not well-executed. There does not seem to be any middle ground.
Both groups can't simultaneously be right.
Normally my reaction to this situation would be "Welp, guess I'll have to go watch it for myself to find out who's wrong," but the problem is that filmgoing in a theatre has become an expensive, difficult and sometimes annoying proposition in recent years, and though I still love doing it, I do not do it lightly.
I'll wait for it to come to my home. The penalty for failure is much lower there.
